SIGIRIYA

THE LION ROCK

An ancient rock fortress nearly 200 metres (660 ft) high, in the heart of Sri Lanka.

King Kashyana (477 – 495 AD) built his palace on the top of this rock for his new capital. It was abandoned after the king’s death and used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.

Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

ANURADHAPURA

THE SACRED CITY

One of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura is famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sinhala civilization.

This sacred city was established around a cutting from the ‘tree of enlightenment’, the Buddha’s fig tree, brought there in the 3rd century B.C. by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns.

Hidden away in dense jungle for over a thousand years, its palaces, monasteries and monuments are now accessible once again.

  • I loved the freedom and flexibility to stop wherever we wanted along the road. Samith was super accomodating when I saw something I wanted to investigate or photograph. That just isn’t possible on public transportation.

  • I’ll start with the sincere kindness Samith showed us when we arrived in Puttalum. We were tired and hungry and he took great care of us. I would recommend Samith in a heartbeat. One of the most special moments was when his family invited us into their home for a lunch before continuing on with our journey home as our trip was cut short because of the Covid19. I can’t wait to continue our adventure in Sri Lanka with Samith!!
